What are the questions I should ask about SD-WAN?

Author: Coevolve

Common questions our clients are asking us about enterprise SD-WAN deployments

bridge-2

With a global team dedicated to understanding next generation WAN technologies, we regularly engage with enterprise customers on how SD-WAN can demonstrably improve their corporate WAN environments.

We have identified three key questions that are posed to us on a regular basis.

1. SD-WAN vendors claim I can save 40% or more off my WAN costs. Is this true?

In our experience there are significant hard cost savings that are enabled by SD-WAN. The justification for this claim is based on being able to extract significant savings from circuits - moving from MPLS to internet circuits. Also consider management efficiencies and improved productivity - this can be more difficult to quantify.

2. How do CAPEX and OPEX models work in an SD-WAN environment?

Financial models differ between SD-WAN vendors. Some offer an OPEX-only subscription based model, others CAPEX “light” plus subscriptions, and others have a higher CAPEX and smaller subscription cost. The key here is to understand the business drivers for your enterprise. As SD-WAN vendors start to depend less on "black-box" hardware, it's likely that SD-WAN subscriptions will become more common, like software licenses

3. What do vendors actually mean when they say “10x the bandwidth”?

At the most fundamental level most SD-WAN vendors are not actually increasing bandwidth at your sites. The calculation focuses on the assumption that the WAN will incorporate more internet bandwidth which is sold at much higher capacities than MPLS, often at far lower cost. The key here though is that if you don’t increase the bandwidth at the edge locations, the SD-WAN service won’t deliver any bandwidth increase.

These are only the most common questions we face on a day to day basis. We have helped numerous clients not only identify and quantify these savings but more importantly, we have delivered these numbers and higher time and again.

In our next edition, we will be sharing with you some use cases on how to compare the business case for SD-WAN against current traditional solutions.
