Building an SD-WAN business case - What should I consider?

Author: Coevolve

What to consider when building an SD-WAN business case

In our last series on "common questions about SD-WAN", we have addressed the top questions presented when trying to debunk the marketing hype around the SD-WAN market. In most of our interactions, once the marketing claims are addressed, our clients tend to focus their questions through three distinct lenses:

  1. Commercial considerations to be explored
  2. Technical benefits achievable
  3. Operational implications

These lenses tend to align with how our clients are also building the internal business case to change. Over the coming weeks we will provide some of the common Q&A discussions we encounter on a day to day basis.

In this edition, we will focus our attention on the commercial considerations:

1. When considering SD-WAN, what should I include in my commercial business case?

We have developed a detailed framework we work through with clients to assess the hard and soft costs that should be considered. There is no single answer as it depends on the current environment. Some of the forgotten parameters include a potential dramatic reduction in MACD fees through the ability to make simple changes, and the simplification of network architecture.

2. What are the most significant cost benefits for a hybrid MPLS and Internet WAN?

The business case is typically built on agility and performance. With SD-WAN, the speed to deploy and shorter circuit installation lead times can represent a significant value to the business. Hard cost reduction is dependent on how much MPLS is retained, and cost savings typically range from high to moderate levels.

3. What do vendors actually mean when they say “10x the bandwidth”?

SD-WAN will provide commercial benefits however these will need to be calculated as business benefits.  The performance improvements, increased service redundancy and flexibility to adapt the network to the critical business applications either internally or externally hosted will deliver considerable commercial benefits.  A cost reduction business case however should not be assumed in this instance.

These are only the most common questions we face on a day to day basis. We have helped numerous clients not only identify and quantify these savings but more importantly, we have delivered these numbers and higher time and again.
